09.19.13 - DUB CHAMPIONS FESTIVAL at THE DELANCEY

Subatomic Sound presents
DUB CHAMPIONS FESTIVAL 2013
Opening Night in NYC with
Deadly Dragon Sound

Dub Champions Festival day 1! Warm up on the first night of the festival in NYC with a Thursday institution, Deadly Dragon Sound’s weekly rub-a-dub party, right around the corner from the Deadly Dragon record shop, is temporarily homeless with the closing of Happy Ending, so we will be throwing the opening party downstairs at The Delancey: dedicated vinyl selectors (aka DJs) with DJs (aka MCs) rocking the mic, preserving the Jamaican sound system culture from which dub originally evolved.

This will be the US debut of India’s first sound system crew, Reggae Rajahs out of New Delhi. Always expect surprise guests. Vibes come correct. The night will start bubbling early, 7pm, with Carter Van Pelt, radio host of Eastern Standard Time – WKCR 89.9 FM and the long running Coney Island Reggae on the Boardwalk summer beach parties.

Get yourself in a dubwise state of mind for the rest of the festival events:

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL
The third annual Dub Champions Festival is a 5 day journey into the international musical phenomenon called “dub” a style characterized by heavy bass, drums, and copious use of effects, where the producers become the artists and the mixing board becomes an instrument. The festival features both performances & educational workshops to exhibit how the music is created and has evolved from the original roots in Jamaican reggae of the 1970s to becoming a cornerstone of the future of electronic bass music. Along the way it has redefined the role of producer and influenced and inspired countless artists and genres from rap to rock to punk to dance music.
Dub Champions Festival was founded in New York City by Emch from Subatomic Sound (www.SubatomicSound.com) and third annual USA festival takes place this year in New York City, Washington DC, & Philadelphia.

ZONGO JUNCTION ( Private Records )
http://zongojunction.net/

Generating a well-deserved buzz in NYC’s exploding afrobeat scene, Zongo Junction electrifies dance floors wherever they perform. The Village Voice describes their live show as “Sheer energy with the force of a tractor-trailer that roars with power and noise.” With five horns, and a six-piece rhythm section, audiences can’t help but move no matter where the band is playing.
If the Talking Heads produced a Fela Kuti record of Sun Ra’s music, the product would probably sound something like Brooklyn’s Zongo Junction, and in an industry where it has become commonplace to watch bands perform with laptops & backing tracks instead of live musicians, Zongo Junction takes the stage 11 strong. “The only thing Zongo Junction has to do to start a legitimate dance party is show up and plug in – anyone within a square block earshot of this Ford-tough funk factory would be hard pressed not to join in the hoopla” says the Bay Area’s SF Station.

NEW YORK SKA JAZZ ENSAMBLE
http://newyorkskajazzensemble.com/

The New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble (NYSJE) is an internationally renowned recording and touring group. Since the bands inception in 1994, they have released ten CDs and they have performed regularly throughout Europe, Canada, USA, and South America.

NYSJEs recordings and performances have garnered them critical acclaim for their high energy, creative originals, kinetic ska interpretations of jazz standards, as well as their potent mix of dance hall, reggae, rock steady and jazz. Performance highlights include: The North Sea Jazz Festival, the Montreal Jazz Festival, The Quebec Festival de Musique, Musiques en Ete (Geneva), The Bob Marley Reggae Festival with Israel Vibration and Sister Carol, and The Discover and Bell Atlantic Jazz festivals in the U.S. In addition, NYSJE has the singular distinction of being the first American Ska band to play in Poland after the wall came down.

The band had been featured in Downbeat, Reggae Nucleus, The Beat, Ragga and Jazziz magazines. NYSJE s music can be heard regularly on television– on the Nickelodeon network, MTVs Road Rules, as well as two nationally airing Campbells Soup Commercials. In Italy, their video, Properly, airs on MTV.
